Rose & Crown

For such a small bay town, Lewes boasts restaurants serving food from the sea, land, farm, Ireland, Italy, and, of course in Delaware’s oldest town, Britain, in the form of, since 1984, Rose & Crown in the Hotel Rodney.  A British gastropub in downtown Lewes, the state’s earliest settlement for English immigrants, seems redundant, but where else in Lewes can you find the motherland’s Shepherd’s Pie, chicken pot pie, fish & chips, and every other American pub option (curious, no bangers and mash for a U.K. themed restaurant)?  A splendid happy hour can be found among the booth-and-table bar scene restaurant, serving lunch and dinner specials to an often drinking audience.  Like the reputation for food from its faux U.K. ancestral home, nobody will confuse Rose & Crown with haute cuisine, but even for comfort/bar food, it is passable though with sometimes uneven service.  But Rose & Crown serves the drinking public with aplomb and a handful of good appetizers when you need a good England gastropub as a visiting option.  Lewes is the first town in the first state, and has a sister city, Lewes, England, both Lewes’ located in the County of Sussex.  The Delmarva Foodie Elitist has never dined in Lewes, England, but our research confirms the town has no know fine culinary reputation – neither does Rose & Crown, but visitors from Lewes, England may find a restaurant home in Lewes, Delaware and, well, that is something, but not worth visiting unless, of course, you hail from Lewes.
