Robin Hood Restaurant
Robin Hood Restaurant’s sign says it was established in 1968, and its appearance (inside and outside) seems unchanged from the year that NASA first orbited the moon in Apollo 8 and Congress passed the Civil Rights Act. Open only from 7:00am – 3:00pm, Robin Hood caters to a breakfast and lunch crowd searching for a diner menu in a close-to-the-boardwalk location, nothing fancier than shorts and a t-shirt. And close to the ocean it is, as Robin Hood occupies a prime slot on the Rehoboth Avenue strip, but unfortunately does not always offer prime service or food. Breakfast is more than passable, offering all the usual trappings, but nothing more than a ‘greasy diner’ approach. Lunch has the same appeal, but not as greasy, offering a wide variety of sandwiches and salads that are quick and easy — good but not memorable. Robin Hood the 1377 English literary character who famously stole from the rich to reward the poor, would not have to pilfer Robin Hood Restaurant, because the price of a meal will not tax any visitor’s wallet, yet still leave you with a friendly and satisfying meal served quickly enough to send you promptly back to Henlopen with your merry crew. Alas, the location may be razed next year, giving way to a new hotel that will house retail on the lower level, Robin Hood Restaurant included, so its merry crew will have a new restaurant from which to spread the wealth to Rehoboth Beach tourists, rather than the poor. Robin Hood the literary character buried moral turpitude in righteous acts; Robin Hood the restaurant will soon take from those who can afford its boardwalk location pricing, delivering fair food and service to a community that is anything but poor. Ahh, Rehoboth Beach’s interpretation of the fable, the dyslexic version . . .
