Misaki
Americanized sushi is prepared with vinegared rice, often with added salt and sugar (known as shari rice), accompanied by ingredients such as raw and cooked seafood and vegetables. Sushi, which translates in Japanese to ‘its sour,’ referring to its origin as fermented rice preserved in salt, is sometimes confused with sashimi, a dish consisting of thinly sliced raw fish or meat without sushi rice. Why this background? Because Misaki offers good traditional American-style sushi (including nigiri, oblong mound of rice with a single piece of fish on top) and maki rolls, what most people consider sushi, seaweed-rolled rice with various fish and vegetables. The rolls, nigiri, and sashimi (without rice) are standard fare and fairly priced, all delivered in a strip mall restaurant setting with effective service. Mikasi, only open for dinner, closes early and has been serving Bethany Beach residents for years, with a slight local following. It’s not award-winning, but not grocery store sushi either. Mikasi will satisfy your sushi desire for raw fish and rice, but will never be your local go-to sushi place for special occasions.
