VFW Post 7234 Chicken Shack

For decades, the Ocean View Chapter of the VFW has stood watch in front of the Bethany Beach National Guard, protecting the Army’s outpost with an out-of-service cannon, anchored helicopter, active military unit, and . . . bar-b-que chicken.  The secret recipe has not changed since 1972, nor should it given the tasty brine, and don’t ask about the basking sauce’s ingredients, which are guarded like war plans by this feisty bunch of veterans.  The VFW volunteers start roasting chicken at 6:30am every Saturday from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and on many Saturdays, the 1000 roasted birds + bread + chips (for $10) are sold out by noon – cash only.  The Vets, led by long time pit master Ken Webber, make a tasty and mean bird, cooked just right on coals that stay so warm you could grill on them through the weekend.  Picnic tables dot the local pit area, but most take their chicken to go.  And remember to thank the Vets not only for their service, but for roasting the best damn chicken in the state.
