Cilantro Cochina de Mexico
Boasting Grandma Matilde’s recipes, Cilantro Cochino de Mexico is less authentic Mexican and more resort town Tex-Mex, but good enough to please grandma, nonetheless, assuming grandma doesn’t care to replicate her homeland’s love of cuisine. Service is usually warm and friendly at this Rehoboth Avenue strip restaurant, which may be known as much for its generous drinks as it is for its less than generous serving sizes. Indoor and outdoor seating abound the larger-than-you think restaurant, with families and large groups welcome. While à la carte dining and pricing is prominent in resort towns, charging extra for condiments such as sour cream and sauce sends a tourist-trap message. Cilantro offers all the usual basics, none too memorable, and all passable. The restaurant offers a VIP service, which apparently rewards with loyalty points and inside event messaging (to the extent you care) – the Delmarva Foodie Elitist always finds it curious when restaurants offer financial incentives to encourage return visits. Better to impress with quality service, food, and atmosphere than to reward return guests with discounts. But, hey, we just visit, eat, and review, leaving the economics to restaurant proprietors. Given the no doubt lofty rent for such a high trafficked area on Rehoboth Avenue, the folks at Cilantro seem to know what they are doing, proven, it seems, by the ubiquitous vacation photos of the owners on the restaurant’s website, also a curious choice. There are better Mexican restaurant options in the Delmarva region, but perhaps none with such a convenient address.
