Rosenfeld’s Jewish Delicatessen
Oy, a Jewish deli at the Delaware beach? Opening the first of now two locations (the original Ocean City location recently closed) required a lot of chutzpah, especially given that non-authentic pastrami, corned beef, and matzo ball soup would be easily smoked-out by big-city deli veterans accustomed to their local neighborhood butcher serving their favorite cured meats. But Rosenfeld’s delivers, and its Jewish-style deli fare more than gains nana’s approval. Its piled-high combo sandwiches, Reubens (sloppy joes), soups, and hot dogs dare to achieve local legendary status, if only because they are the only Jewish deli game in town. Beware, the bagels are not what you might find in NY or NJ (blame the water), and the $16 sandwiches are meant to be shared, along with the large sides and other deli classics that are hard to resist. Keeping profitable a Jewish-style deli is hard, given the labor and time intense preparation of most food items, limited shelf-life of pre-prepared foods, and an often demanding audience accustomed to big city quality fare, hard to duplicate in a coastal setting with an uneven hourly labor pool. But Rosenfeld’s is up to the task, and more than delivers quality food, even if it is not typical beach fare. Rosenfeld’s menu almost dares you to order generously, but only after your exercise class for the day, because the food is heavy and salty, and typically provokes a recovery nap and a few Tums.
