Preshy’s Restaurant
For years, many assumed that Preshy’s, now known as Midway Cafe, which has not been visited, was a shameless culinary anomaly. Could a restaurant with such bad food and surly service really last for so many years in the same spot? Stanger things in this industry occur, but a McKinsey case study should have been commissioned as to how (or why?) Preshy’s stayed in business for so long. It must have been the terribly inexpensive cost of the meal or the novel experience of actually eating there, which always generated a good story, one where your friend no doubt remarks at the end of the tale, “that can’t possibly be true.” Preshy’s was advertised for sale last year; it is not known whether the cantankerous owner found a buyer or investor., or finally just folded the place The (alleged) Northern Italian food tasted right out of a can or box; there was virtually no personal table service; no substitutions; and no deviation from the menu, including asking for anything like lemon or ice in the water, salad dressing on the side, or the like. Remember Seinfeld’s Soup Nazi episode? Ask your server about a dish, you get no response other than, ‘read the menu’ or ‘no substitutions.’ The ambience, service, and overall experience is straight out of a SNL routine, reminding of John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd’s famous ‘Cheeseburga, Cheeseburga, No Coke, Pepsi’ skit, although the stage burgers in Studio 8H during SNL’s taping were better than anything Preshy’s dispensed from its kitchen. The owner was nearly a one-person show, who took your order; bussed tables; tried to force diners to order a glass of house wine (one version of house red or white only, no choices); and engaged in other sometimes anxious conduct that rendered Preshy’s a bad joke in the comedic way or the ‘joke’s on you’ in the culinary way. Either way, regular patrons ultimately stopped going, leading to a new restaurant that we likely will never review. Rest in agony Preshy’s, the same agony you delivered to new visitors for decades.
